01 / Where it began

Our mother was an art teacher at the public elementary school in Cedar Rapids. She raised the two of us on a single salary, in a small house with thin walls and warm lamps.

The only luxury we had was art. But not the kind you buy. The kind she made. Hand-sketched prints she'd tape to the kitchen wall above the stove. Watercolor studies pinned to our bedroom door. A new charcoal portrait on the fridge every Sunday morning.

We learned, before we could write our names properly, that a wall covered in art is a wall that loves you back.

02 / The dream that came later

Emma went to the Rhode Island School of Design at 18 and learned how prints are really made. The paper, the inks, the kind of pressure you need to get a clean black. Iris stayed closer to home, studied art history at the University of Iowa, then spent six years in marketing because the bills had to be paid.

Every January we'd meet at our mother's house and try to buy one museum print. One. Together. Splitting the cost. They were never under $80, and the frame was always extra.

By 2024 we were both in our thirties. Our mother had just retired. We were sitting on her front porch in late October and Iris said: "The prints we wanted as kids should be a normal thing now, shouldn't they?"

We didn't sleep much that winter.

03 / The kitchen lab

We started Atelier Poster in February 2025 with one fine-art printer, thirty designs Emma had been working on for years, and a stubborn refusal to charge gallery prices.

Iris ran the orders from a corner of her kitchen in Iowa City. Emma drew most evenings after her freelance work. Our first month, we sold eleven prints. Three of them to our mom.

By summer we'd moved to a small fulfillment partner forty miles east, still in Iowa. We do everything from here. The printing. The framing. The packing. The handwritten thank-you note that goes in every box.

Today, almost a year in, our prints hang in over 5,000 American homes. We still print to order, every piece. We still pack them ourselves on Wednesday afternoons. And the only luxury we offer is the one our mother gave us first. A wall covered in art that loves you back.

    The one who draws.

RISD, class of 2018. Lives in Cedar Rapids, Iowa with a German shepherd named Charcoal. Designs most of our line by hand on cold-press paper, then digitizes for production.

Spends Sunday mornings at the local farmers' market and refuses to design anything she wouldn't hang in her own home.

  • Iris Bauer. Operations

The one who keeps it running.

University of Iowa art history grad, then six years at a brand agency in Chicago. Moved back to Iowa City in 2024 to start this with Emma.

Writes most of our emails herself. Handles the supplier calls. Still reads art catalogues for fun. Tea, not coffee. Always.

A NOTE FROM US

Thank you for being here.

If you've read this far, you probably understand what we're trying to do. We're two sisters making the kind of prints we wished we could afford as kids. And trying to make sure no kid (or grown-up) ever has to choose between art and rent again.

If you ever have a question, a request, an idea for a print, or just want to say hi. Email us. We read everything ourselves.
